Dress up your front porch with snowman front porch pillars using removable vinyl. Use on permanent pillars or use primed wood to make your own removable snowmen.
Snowman Front Porch Pillars
Taking down the Christmas lights always makes the outside of your house feel really plain. These snowman front porch decorations will help add a wintery mood. Don’t have porch pillars? No problem! You can use pre-primed 1′ x 6′ wood.
Pair them with a Sowman Rag Wreath and a few Snowflake Hangers for a very wintery festive porch.
Snowman Front Porch Pillars Materials:
- Stocking hat
- Yarn
- Cardboard
- Pen
- Utility knife

- Orange removable vinyl
- Cricut vinyl cutting machine
- Primed 1′ x 6′ wood board – to make a snowman if you don’t have porch pillars
Snowman Front Porch Pillars Directions:
Make the Snowman’s Hat:
Trace a stocking hat shape onto cardboard and cut it out with a utility knife. Slide the cardboard inside the hat. Repeat for the other hat if making 2 snowmen. You can use any hats you want. These are from the Dollar Tree.
Now, make a pom-pom for the hat, if you want one for the hat. If you don’t want a pom-pom you can skip this step. Wrap the yarn around a cereal box about 75 times. Remove from box by carefully sliding off.
Cut the yarn in half. It should be about 18″ long when cut.
Cut the yarn again into thirds and stack the piles together.
Tie a piece of yarn around the center and tightly double knot to create a pom-pom. Trim as desired.
Thread the ends of the pom onto the top of the hat. Do this by sticking the yarn and a pen through the knit hat. You could also use a large sewing needle or crochet hook. Secure with a knot. Repeat with the other hat.
Cut 4 long pieces of yarn, about 24″ each, and thread them through the back of the hat. You will use these pieces to tie the hat onto the porch posts. We used a pen to help get the yarn through but a large needle or crochet hook would work, too. Tuck the yarn in the hat and pull it through. You could use white yarn and it will blend in perfectly with white porch posts.
Attach the hat to the porch pillar by tying the two pieces of yarn around the post and securing with a bow or knot.
Make the Snowman Face and Buttons with Removable Vinyl:
Cut out thee eyes, nose, mouth, and buttons using a Cricut Explore Air 2. If you are new to the Circut, check out our A Beginner Guide to Crafting with the Cricut Explore Air 2 for tips on cutting. These decorations are meant to be removable. So for the vinyl pieces, you want to use removable vinyl in black and orange. You can make the buttons and face in any color, of course.
Sign up for our newsletter to receive the free SVG cut files for these pieces. We will also send you a link to the project right in Design Space so you can just click it and make it. You may also want to join Cricut Access! We love this program which includes extra discounts on machines and materials.
You can download the cut files and then upload them into Cricut Design Space. You can see how to upload a design into Cricut Design Space in this Candy Apple Twister Game. Or just use the link to make it!
Cut out the nose with orange vinyl and weed. Cut out the eyes and buttons with black vinyl and weed.
Peel the pieces from the backing and place them onto your porch post, pressing gently onto the post. You can use transfer paper if you would like, but it’s not necessary. Save material and time, and just weed, and affix by hand.
Make the Snowman’s Scarf:
Finally, the snowman needs a scarf! You can use any scarf you like. This one is a cheap blanket cut into a strip.
Tie a scarf around the post. Fold the scarf in half, wrap it around the post and tuck the loose ends into the loop. Repeat with the other post. This scarf is just a cheap blanket cut into a strip.
At the end of the winter, simply peel off the vinyl and remove the hat and scarf.
How To Make A Snowman Porch Pillar Decoration without a Pillar:
The porch pillars used in this tutorial are 5.5″ square, so putting this on a board would work, too! Both large hardware stores sell pre-primed (white) 1′ x 6′ pieces of wood that are about 8′ long. Purchase one and ask the store to cut it in half.
Follow all the same directions above except for the hat. For the hat omit the cardboard in the hat and yarn. Just slip it onto the very top of the wood piece. To display the snowman, just prop it up on your porch.
