Need snacks for traveling this summer? Our summer road trips typically include quick convenience store stops and fast food chain drive thru’s. But with some easy pre-planning, pack and provide healthy snacks for travel. Here are just 6 travel snack ideas that are not only good for you, but filling and tasty too. Plus many of them can be made right in your own kitchen.
Nuts: Pick a nut, any nut and munch away. Almonds, cashews, and pistachios are healthy options and offer not only an awesome crunch, but will fill you up as well. Try this Homemade Honey Roasted Nuts Recipe from True Aim Education to add a sweet twist to this snack.
Granola bars: There are so many varieties to choose from so pick ones that are lower in sugar and high in fiber. Many health food stores carry all-natural brands that have fewer calories and pack a lot of whole grains and natural ingredients. I mix up our favorite Homemade Granola Bar Recipe to use up what we have in the pantry. You could even use my Breakfast Cookie Recipe for a healthy but yummy treat.
Oatmeal: Because oatmeal is so versatile and you can add just about everything to it to add some sweetness and flavor. Mix up a container of natural instant oatmeal and add nuts, raisins, any type ofgranola, and if you have the cooler space, some fresh cut up fruit. Just add hot water when you hit that fast food joint to use the bathroom. You can just ask the counter person for the hot water. I love these homemade oatmeal packets from The Yummy Life. Put your mix in a canning jar and you have an instant container to eat from.
Yogurt: Yogurt is a great snack, but maybe not so great for travel. That is unless you make Frozen Yogurt Dots! Not only are they yummy, they are small and store easily in a cooler.
Jerky: Jerky is a great snack packed with protein. You can find jerky in many different meats, too. Turkey jerky is one of our favorites. You can even get salmon jerky! I love this popcorn mix with jerky from My Life of Travels and Adventure for a protein packed delicious travel snack.
Sweet Treats: To keep your sweet tooth happy, pack some small packs of miniature cookies or chocolates. It is vacation, after all! You could also make some dehydrated fruit for a sweet treat. Or use applesauce to make homemade fruit roll ups.
Vacations and road trips are meant to be fun especially when you reach your destination. So try to eat healthy snacks while traveling so you can indulge while away.
