Living far away from the people you love is a major drag. But with Skype video calling, you don’t have to miss out on life events or the everyday moments with family. Video calling has helped my kids to grow up knowing aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and even a sister who live far away.
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Skype video calling has been a major player in allowing us and our children to have a meaningful relationship with family and friends who live on the other side of the country. While my parents and one of my sisters live in Las Vegas with us, I have another sister in Michigan. Both of my husband’s siblings live in New York, his dad lives in Florida, and he has a daughter in Pennsylvania. We never planned to be this far away from our loved ones, but like many people, a job took us cross country.
One of the things I love most about Skype is when my kids have playtime with my sister. In fact, whenever she calls us the kids immediately clamor to ask if she can please get on her computer so they can play! There are many games involved in playtime while video calling including cars, building blocks, stories, and even coloring.
I bet you didn’t know you can have a sword fight over the internet, eh? Well, you can and it will keep a four year old boy entertained for a good 30 minutes. My daughter Ella prefers to play Barbies. My sister has three Barbies – Pink, Purple, and Blue are their names. Blue now resides with us, though, because apparently the Barbie wanted to come to Vegas for a visit! Blue just showed up one day in the mail and Ella was beside herself with excitement to finally “meet” Blue face to face.
Video calling with Skype has been a lifesaver for our family while living far apart. I wish we could afford to travel east every year to visit everyone! So until the day we strike it big, we’ll be using Skype to stay close to our family and friends far away.
