Upcycle bottles to make an easy DIY patriotic decoration for the Fourth of July or other summer events.
Decorating for holidays all year round is one of my favorite things to do. But buying new decorations every year gets expensive and it’s a bit wasteful. I have to stay out of the dollar store when the holiday decorations are out or I go crazy!
It’s fun to find creative ways to make new decor from items you already have or use around the house. If you have plenty of empty glass bottles in all different fun shapes and sizes from a party or just everyday living, you can use them to make this craft project. Use the empty bottles to make a patriotic display, but this project would work for any holiday or event.
Easy DIY Patriotic Bottles Decoration
Patriotic Bottles Materials:
3 empty glass bottles, washed, dried, and labels removed
Rubbing alcohol
Cotton balls
White spray paint
3″ burlap ribbon
Wood stars
Red & blue baker’s twine
Red & blue acrylic craft paint
Paintbrush
Hot glue
Scissors
Patriotic Bottles Directions:
Gather 3 glass bottles. These can be soda bottles, beer bottles, wine bottles – whatever you want. We used beer bottles.
Remove all the labels and any residual glue from the bottles. We found that if you get the labels wet, they peeled off very easily, and we were able to scrub off the adhesive with a dishcloth. It was very easy on the beer bottles, at least.
Once the labels are off, wash and dry the bottles. Then use a cotton ball to wipe rubbing alcohol all over the bottles.
In a well-ventilated space, spray your bottles with white spray paint. You will need more than one coat to cover the bottle if it is colored. Let dry, according to the directions on the can, between each coat.
While the bottles are drying, paint 2 wooden stars blue and 1 wooden star red with the acrylic paint. You will probably need two coats. Let dry completely. Add baker’s twine to each painted wood star. Tie a small bow. Trim ends.
Cut a piece of burlap ribbon so it wraps around the bottle and overlaps it about 1/2″.
Wrap the ribbon around the bottle and attach it with a small dollop of hot glue.
Affix each painted wood star to the front of the bottles with hot glue.
Alternate the blue and red stars and twine on the 3 bottles choosing any color pattern you like.
Display the bottles on a mantle, as a table centerpiece. You could even add flowers or other decorations in the bottles for an added flair.
