Salted caramel gelato is topped with a shot of espresso in this yummy salted caramel affogato recipe sponsored by DREAM™ gelato.
My sister has been visiting from Michigan for the past week. Every evening after dinner we’ve had a cup of coffee, which is not a normal thing for me, but she’s dealing with a little jet lag. I got creative one night and decided we’d try out a salted caramel affogato instead of our normal cups of coffee. I’ve been fascinated with affogato for years, but had never made one. An affogato is basically a grown up version of an ice cream float. You top scoops of gelato with a shot (or two) of hot espresso. Sounds terrible, right? Well, make it with a couple of scoops of salted caramel gelato and it’s over the top delicious!
As I’ve mentioned before, I cut back on dairy in my diet last January. I’ve had fun the past year trying out different non dairy milks and products. Almond milk is on of my favorites especially when it comes to sweets. For our affogatos I used DREAM™ gelato, which is an almond based gelato.
DREAM™ Gelato is the first (and only) almond-based, non-dairy gelato. Made in the traditional Italian style from real almonds, DREAM™ Gelatos are vegan, free of artificial flavors and preservatives, free of highly refined sugars, and free of lactose, gluten, cholesterol, and trans fats. DREAM™ Gelato is available in a 8 delicious flavors including my current obsession, salted caramel!
You only need two ingredients to make a salted caramel affogato – DREAM™ Salted Caramel Gelato and espresso. I don’t own an espresso machine so I went with the next best thing – instant espresso. I use this stuff all the time in recipes and it works great!
Put a scoop (or two) of DREAM™ Gelato in a small glass or mug. These glasses are actually mini glasses similar to ones used for beer tasting. They fit a small scoop of gelato and a shot of espresso perfectly. But any small glass, like a demitasse, would work great.
Quickly make your espresso. You want it to be hot when you pour it over the gelato. For instant espresso you just mix together boiling water and the instant espresso powder and it’s ready to go. Pour the hot espresso over the gelato and swirl just a bit. That’s it! Your salted caramel affogato is ready to drink. Add a swirl of caramel sauce and some sea salt for an extra bit of decadence.
