Make a healthy snack at home with pistachios! This easy to make trail mix is full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants!

As I shared earlier this week, I’ve decided to start leading healthier lifestyle.  One way I’m doing that is by really paying attention to the food I’m cooking and eating.  I’ve done really well making sure to eat both breakfast and lunch, which I used to skip a lot.  Another trick I’ve been using is to make sure to have healthy snacks on hand at all times so I don’t have  a “food emergency” and end up eating food that I’m trying to avoid.  One food I always have on hand are nuts and recently, I’ve been making a yummy trail mix with pistachios.

Chocolate covered cherry and pistachios trail mix is a snack that is good for you.  I put in a little bit of dark chocolate, dried cherries and pistachios.  I found out on the Pistachios Health Institute Website that pistachios have good cholesterol, good fat, vitamin B6, copper and manganese – all essential for a healthy you.  Pistachios also have three grams of dietary fiber, or about 12% of the recommended daily value and fiber helps you feel full longer.

In addition to eating better this year, I’m also trying to move more.  I’ve mostly been walking, but this week I tried out a new DVD workout by celebrity trainer Valerie Waters called Valslide.  Valslide is a full body workout and it only takes 25 minutes to do.  I figured I’d give it a try and didn’t believe I could get a full workout in 25 minutes.  My legs still feel a little rubbery the day after!  I love Valerie’s tip on the infographic above that cardio plus weight training plus healthy eating are the fastest way to a fit body.  The Pistachio Health Institute has partnered with Valerie in the Shine Like The Stars sweepstakes where you can enter to win a pistachio prize pack so you can put Valerie’s tips to use.

Have you made any changes in your lifestyle to help you get fit in 2014?  Mix up some trail mix and head out for a walk today!
