Make a patriotic star banner out of felt, buttons and twine! This easy craft garland is the perfect decoration for summer.
Next to wreaths, banners and garlands are my favorite crafts to make. They are quick, easy and inexpensive to make. They are also great for kids to make. Our Halloween garland is made up of easy pom poms that kids can put together.
This star banner has a rustic feel thanks to twine, felt and buttons. We used two same sized star of each color on our banner. But it would be easy to vary the sizes of the stars and add more to the garland for a unique and fun decoration.
Patriotic Star Banner
To make the star banner you will need:
Red, White and Blue Felt – 1 9×12 sheet makes 3 stars so use as many sheets as you need to make the length of banner you want.
Red, white and blue buttons – One for each star, alternating colors
Star template – print this out or trace a cookie cutter or freehand a funky star. We used the same size star, but different size stars would be fun.
Fold a piece of felt in half length wise. Cut out a star template. Make sure the star is small enough to fit on to half of the folded piece of felt. Trace three stars onto each piece of felt with a pencil.
Cut out the star. There will be two stars. Keep them together. Repeat with each color until you have as many stars as you’d like on the banner.
Next, use the hot glue to glue the two stars together. Don’t glue all the way around. Leave a small opening on each side to thread through twine.
Decorate each felt star pair with color buttons. Use hot glue to glue the buttons to each star. Feel free to layer colors or keep them individual. We tried to red, white and blue on each star.
Finally, thread the stars on to twine. Cut a piece of twine the desired length. Thread stars through the opening on each side and space evenly on the twine to display.
You can add more or less stars to the twine. Even try overlapping the stars and hide the twine for more a star focused banner.
String the banner on a mantle or banister or even outside on a front porch. Decorate with our patriotic pool noodle wreath and red white and blue citronella candles.
