Sock Gnome Directions:
Make the Sock Gnome Body
Start by making the gnome’s body using the sock, beans, and polyfill stuffing.
Pour half the beans into a cup.
Put the top of the sock over the cup and invert, pouring the beans into the sock. Repeat until you have 2 cups of beans in the sock.
Stuff the sock with stuffing until it’s almost full.
Cinch the sock at the opening and close it shut. Secure with a piece of yarn or string. Tie in a double knot. The body is complete.
Make the Sock Gnome’s Hat
Now, make the sock gnome’s hat using the piece of felt.
To make the hat, wrap a piece of felt around the sock, ensuring it wraps completely around and overlaps on the back. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to get a bigger piece of fabric or felt. If it fits, and it should, you’ll need to make a hat.
Fold the felt in half lengthwise and cut as shown, removing 2 triangles.
Wrap the felt around the gnome to create a hat. Secure on the back only, with hot glue.
Place a nose on the front of the gnome by hot gluing a wood ball onto the front. Make sure the nose is just below where the hat falls.
Make the Sock Gnome’s Beard
Next, you will make a beard out of faux fur using a utility knife. Pay attention to how the fur lays and use a utility knife to cut the backing of the fur, making sure not to cut too much of the fur. The piece of fur we used is about 3″ x 4″.
Cut a notch in the top of the fur. This is for the nose.
Finish up by adding the hat and beard to the sock gnome:
Add hot glue to the top of the fur and tuck it under the nose and along the sides.
Slide the hat down over the nose and beard.
Once everything is in the desired position, glue down the hat.
Lift the edges of the hat and apply hot glue under them.
Display your sock gnome wherever you like! They look great on mantles, bookshelves, and stairs.
