Hooray- it’s finally spring! One of my family’s favorite springtime activities is backyard movie night! Lawn chairs, blankets, snacks, and a borrowed projector make for fun family outdoor movies right in our own backyard.
When we purchased our town home a few years ago, one of the things we had to compromise on was a big backyard as it was just not in our budget. Instead, we settled for a tiny 10 x 20 walled in backyard. While we can’t exactly fit a swing set back there, we quickly discovered that the ugly brick walls were perfect movie screens! So when Bigelow Tea wanted to know how we use tea in our spring activities, I knew my answer was our backyard movie nights.
One of the highlights of outdoor movie nights is, of course, the snacks! Popcorn, with lots of butter, is always a must. Around here we also like chocolate covered raisins with our movies. For our outdoor movies, I like to include some kind of frozen treat as well. We almost always drink iced tea when the whether turns warmer, but I wanted to do something a little more fun to incorporate a yummy, and healthy, Bigelow Tea into our movie night.
Earlier in the week I had made Green Tea Strawberry Smoothies with Bigelow Tea’s pomegranate green tea. The kids didn’t like them, of course, because my kids are weird and don’t like smoothies. But here’s my sneaky trick: I freeze the smoothies in Popsicle molds. It works every single time. The kids rant and rave over their “Popsicle” and gobble them up.
So why Bigelow Tea? Did you know that Bigelow Tea is a third generation, family owned tea company? The company was started during the Depression by Ruth Bigelow, who had lost her interior design business. Ruth needed a way to bring in money for her family so she turned to an old colonial tea recipe and began making and selling it. Today that original tea, “Constant Comment,” is still Bigelow’s flagship tea and only Ruth’s son and daughter-in-law know the recipe.
I love the fact that Bigelow was started by a mother trying to extend her family’s budget during an economic down turn. Sound familiar? It sure strikes a chord with me. I also love that during it’s entire existence, a woman has been at the helm of Bigelow Tea. First Ruth, then her son and and his wife, and today Ruth’s daughter, Cindi, is the CEO of Bigelow Tea. I love a company with a good story behind it and Bigelow has a great story!
As you can see, the Bigelow Green Tea Pomegranate Smoothie Popsicles were a hit with the kids at our backyard movie night. I love that we can support a family owned business by buying Bigelow Tea. Stay tuned as the summer progresses for other fun frozen tea recipes! You can find out more about my Bigelow Tea shopping trip in my Google+ profile.
