Helping Kids Explore Careers

Introduce your kids to different careers through the American Worker Video Series from our sponsor, Kronos.

My kids are at an age where they have started talking about what job they want when they grow up. They know a lot of people with jobs that are pretty normal jobs like a teacher or nurse. They also have the privilege of knowing several military personnel who fly planes for the air force. Their uncle is an air traffic controller. Then there is my job – digital media and blogging – which didn’t even exist as a job when I was their age! I try to teach them to keep an open mind about what job they may want to have when they are adults because the world is full of fun opportunities.

I’ve been fascinated with the “1 in one hundred million” Web Series recently.  “1 in one hundred million” is a site devoted to sharing the personal stories of people who do often unrecognized jobs. The series includes videos about people who make baseball bats, wrangle alligators, and drive trucks among other jobs.

The newest video in the series is about Tracer Finn who is the Assistant Head of Lighting the show Le Reve – The Dream at The Wynn, Las Vegas. I’ve actually seen the show and it’s incredible! It was really inspiring to see all the work that is put in to just the lighting! I never thought about lighting being an art form, but Tracer says that in his job he “paints with light.” Really cool!

The videos are a great way to show kids that there are so many options when it comes to choosing a career.
