Make a pair of “If you can read this” socks for Valentine’s Day using a pair from the dollar store, Iron-On or HTV vinyl, and a Cricut cutting machine.
Valentine’s If you can read this socks are made by adding the saying “If you can read this… Kiss Me” cut from Heat Transfer Vinyl to the bottom of a pair of Valentine’s Day socks. HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl) is a type of vinyl material that can be cut into designs with a Cricut cutting machine and applied to fabric using heat and pressure. This is a quick and easy Valentine’s Day craft that you can finish in under 30 minutes.
If your socks have a high polyester content, you can make these using Cricut Infusibel Ink like these St. Patrick’s Day socks.

If You Can Read This Valentines Socks Instructions
Open Design Space to create your If You Can Read This Saying
We use Design Space on a Mac laptop.
On your laptop, open Design Space.
This project is available in Design Space as If You Can Read This Valentine’s Day Socks. Make sure to follow me in Design Space to see my other projects. You can save the project in Design Space to use later on by clicking the little ribbon tab under the photos of the design.
You can add your sayings by editing the text or simply adding your own. I used the Cricut Sans font, but you can also change up the font to anything you like.
Resize the images to fit the bottom of your socks.
Use a ruler or tape measure to measure the bottom of your socks. Adjust the size of the sayings in Design Space so they will fit on the bottom of the socks. They do stretch, so take that into account when sizing. We made the “If You Can Read This” 1.5″ x 3″ and “KISS ME” 2″ x 2″.
Send the image to your Cricut machine to cut.
Once you are happy with the design, make sure to save it. Just click “Save” at the top of Design Space.
Now that it’s saved choose your machine in the drop-down box on the top right. Choose your machine.
Then click “Make it” on the top right of the screen.
Choose how to load your materials into the Cricut machine.
On the next screen, you will choose how to load your materials into the machine. Cricut Smart Iron-on can be cut without a mat on a Cricut Explore 3, Maker 3, or the Joy. If you are not using Smart Iron-on, then click the mat option.
These socks are a great project for the Joy. The Joy is my favorite Cricut machine, so I will always use it if I have the chance. I had Smart Iron-on for the Explore or Maker. You can use Smart materials on a mat. Cut it down to size and put it on a Standard Grip Mat with the glossy side facing down.
Click “Confirm” in the bottom right corner when you are ready to go.
Review the image before cutting.
On the next screen, you can review how the Cricut will cut your image on the HTV. You can move the image around as needed.
When cutting Iron-on or HTV, it is important to remember to mirror the image. If you don’t mirror the image, your design will turn out backwards when you iron it on. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten to mirror the image, so don’t worry if you forget. Just cut it again with the mirror on.
Once you are happy with how many to cut and where they are on the HTV, turn on your machine. If you use a mat, put the HTV on the mat glossy side down.
If using Smart Iron-on, cut it to the length needed for the project. Then, click “Continue” on the bottom right of the screen.
Cut the HTV with your Cricut Machine
Once you click continue, Design Space will connect via BlueTooth to your machine. Once it has connected, you will choose the material you want to cut. You can click “Browse Materials” to find the HTV you are using, such as glitter, foil, Every Day, Smart, etc.
Load the Smart Iron-on or the mat into the machine. Remember to load Smart Iron-on glossy side down into the machine. The machine is set to cut at the default pressure required for your chosen material. It will also tell you which blade you need to cut the HTV. You will likely only need the fine-point blade.
When the mat is loaded properly the “Go” button on the bottom right of the screen will highlight. Push that, and the machine will begin its cut.
Unload the mat or Smart Iron-on when the cut is finished and click “Done” in Design Space. You are now ready to weed the design.
Weed out the excess vinyl.
Remove the HTV from the mat by pulling the mat away from the HTV.
Weed out the excess HTV with your fingers or weeding tools. With HTV, the material will stay on the clear liner.
Use heat and pressure to adhere the sayings to the socks.
I love to use a Cricut Heat Press to iron the designs to fabric. For this project, we used EasyPress 2.
It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific type of HTV you are using, as the temperature and pressure settings may vary. Cricut has an online heat guide for using their vinyl with Easy Press, Easy Press 2, Mini Press, and Auto Press. The Easy Press 3 use BlueTooth to connect to the Cricut Heat App to send the time and heat to the press.
For the heat transfer material, we used Smart Iron-On. The socks we used were 98% polyester. Hit “Apply,” and the site will provide the heat and duration needed to adhere the HTV to the material.
In this case, the press must be at 315 degrees for 30 seconds with firm pressure. If you scroll down, the site walks you step-by-step in pressing the HTV.
Preheat the press to the desired temperature. Pre-warm the socks if directed by the guide.
Place the design on the fabric face down, liner side up. For the socks to be read when sitting, the bottom of the words must be towards the toe of the sock, as pictured above.
Press the design for the recommended time with the recommended pressure. Flip the socks over and press again according to the directions on the Cricut Heat Guide page.
Check the instructions and remove the liner as directed. Check the settings to see if the liner should be removed when completely cool or warm to the touch. For the socks, the liner was removed when cool to the touch.
Allow the socks to cool completely before wearing them.
