Finger knitting is a great craft to teach kids. All you need is yarn, a pair of scissors and your fingers. It can quickly be done on road trips! Basic finger knitting makes a rope-like piece of yarn. You can then take these pieces and turn them into fun little animals. 

These finger-knitting patterns are for butterflies, penguins, pigs, and chicks. We are assuming that you already know how to finger-knit. You don’t need any fancy yarn to finger-knit. We used cheap Red Heart Yarn in two strands. 

If you’re familiar with finger knitting, you know the “tail” goes fast. The chick, penguin, and pig will be quick to make/knit. The butterflies are quick, too, but you’ll need to make them longer.  Fabric fusion is a must for these to glue on the faces/felt.

Finger Knit Butterflies:

Materials:

• Yarn – doubled up worsted weight or a bulky yarn
• Pipe Cleaners
• Pencil

Begin by finger knitting two separate ropes of yarn.  For one start with 120 inches and for the other rope use a 70 inch long piece of yarn. These will be the wings of the butterfly. Ropes will vary in size a bit depending on the size of fingers and the weight of the yarn used. 

You can use the same color yarn for both wings or do two different colors. Don’t pull the chain tightly after it’s done. You can pull on it to shape it, but don’t tug too hard, just a little. 

Once you have the wings of your butterfly finger knit, finish them off and tie the two ends together in a circle. Knot yarn.

Stack the two small circles on top of each other.

Wrap the yarn tail around the centers. Tie tightly to create wings. Tie the top to create a hanging hook or cut off if you don’t want to hang the butterfly.

Fold a pipe cleaner in half and wrap around the butterfly in the center. Twist the top.

Use a pencil or marker to roll the pipe cleaner to create round antennae.

Finger Knitting Penguin:

Materials

• Black Finger Knit Body
• White Felt
• Orange Felt
• Google Eyes
• Fabric Fusion
• Scissors

Once you have the black body of your penguin finger knitted, tie the tail into a knot so you have an hanging hook.

Cut out a small round piece of white felt for the belly of the penguin.

Affix with Fabric Fusion to the black body. Fabric Fusion is a MUST for this! Don’t use regular glue. 

Add a small orange beak, cut out of orange felt, with Fabric Fusion and attach google eyes. Let dry completely before hanging.

Finger Knitting Pattern Pig:

Materials:

• Pink Finger Knit Body
• Pink Felt
• Black Permanent Marker
• Google Eyes
• Scissors
• Fabric Fusion

Once you have the pink body of the pig finger knitted, tie the tail into a knot at the top so you have a hanging hook.

Cut out a small oval nose for the pig and draw two black lines on the front for a snout. Attach to the body with fabric fusion. Add two google eyes, affixing with fabric fusion.

Finger Knitting Pattern Chick:

Materials:

• Yellow Finger Knit Body
• Orange Felt
• Google Eyes
• Fabric Fusion
• Scissors

Once you have your yellow body of the chick finger knitted, tie the tail into a knot at the top so you have a hook to hang it.

Using orange felt, cut out a small triangle orange beak. Add google eyes and beak to the chick with fabric fusion. Let set to dry completely.
