Tips for Creating A Healthy Family Schedule

Creating a family schedule will help help ensure your kids get everything they need to stay healthy this school year.  I work our family schedule to make sure my kids get plenty of sleep, lots of exercise and healthy meals so we can do our best to stay healthy.


1. Plan Your Schedule Around Bedtime:  I truly believe that sleep is vital to a healthy lifestyle.  I want to make sure that my kids have plenty of time to rest so that they wake up on their own in the morning.  So I work our family schedule around bedtime.  My kids have an early bedtime.  They go to bed most nights at 7:30 PM during the school year. I know the kids are going to take about 30 minutes to wind down and fall asleep so I work that time in to their bedtime.  This means we have to say no to a lot of things, but it’s worth it to have well rested kids ready for the school day.


2. Plan Lots of Exercise:  When I was in elementary school I had three recesses.  Today my daughter has one and it’s only about 10-15 minutes.  My kids love organize activities like sports or dance.  This past spring Ella joined a running club and ran her first 5K – at age 6! That’s a hobby I plan to encourage.

3.  Plan Your Meals and Snacks:  Add this to the list of things I used to do and need to start doing again! Meal planning will give you more time for the kids activities and leave you feeling less frazzled.  I’m pretty good about planning our dinners but I really need to start planning for breakfast and now lunches for school.   If you need help meal planning, check out my post on How To Plan a Menu.  Planning a menu also helps you avoid the last minute panic of what’s for dinner and end up in the drive thru.  Of course, no matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to get my kids to eat enough fruits and vegetables.  Adding a daily vitamin, like Lil’ Critters Gummy Vitamins, can help you make sure the kids are getting all their essentials!

    Fantastic tips! During summer, it’s easy to let my kids sleep late to make up for a late bedtime; it’s not so easy during the school year. And how cool that your daughter joined a running club! I’ve been rehabbing a running injury. Maybe I should ask my dd6 to run with me as I rehab so we can do a few fall 5Ks together.
