My husband and I are avid DIYers. We love to jump in and fix a problem ourselves. I’ve written about several of our DIY projects we’ve tackled. Some DIY tasks were easy and we’d definitely do them ourselves again. But it’s important to know when it’s time to call in help. Sometimes you need a little guidance and instruction to help complete a task the correct way.

Expert help

A few years after moving in to our townhome, we decided we really wanted to replace the builder grade beige carpet that was in the entire downstairs of our townhome. We did it room by room and learned as we went. Peel and stick tile is pretty easy to put down so we handled that, but then we decided to use wood laminate in our living room. Things got a little trickier. We realized that we were in a little over our heads. It was time for these DIYers to find an expert.

Our friend, Tom, happens to be pretty good with DIY projects. He’s built several pieces of furniture on his own for his wife. He has a garage full of tools like a circular saw and a nail gun, which it turns out are super handy when laying a laminate floor. Tom also has years of experience working with his hands. He was able to come in for an afternoon and help us out.

Tom showed my husband how to use the saw so we could cut the board properly. It turned out you need a special blade to cut the laminate. He also instructed my husband on how to use a nail gun so that we could finish the floor boards. Tom saved us time and money. Our save-some-money DIY project would have quickly turned into a very expensive project if Tom hadn’t stepped in and lent us his expertise. I love DIY projects and I like to think we can handle all of them on our own. But there is a point where you have to know when you need help.

My husband and I learned a valuable lesson laying down the laminate floor. Sometimes in life you need the guiding hand and advice of someone who is an expert. Without our friend’s expert assistance, our floors would still be incomplete. Your local State Farm agent is also an expert in many areas of life.
