Technology is here to stay and owning a family computer has become more of a necessity than a want. In fact, both of my kids have a zip drive on their school supply list for next year. Buying a computer can be a major investment, though, and it can be easy to just think you can go without.

We have chosen to invest in a family laptop for both the kids and us to use for school.

Right now, on, you can use both a sale code and a rebate to save money on a new computer just in time for back to school season.

Save an extra $15 on all orders over $75 and get FREE SHIPPING with the code SAVINGSSAVE15.

You can stack that code with a $20 rebate on orders over $300 on! But hurry because the rebate ends July 31, 2016.

But which laptop to get?

I’m currently using an HP Envy 15 and I love it! This one has 6 GB Ram and 1 TB of memory so it runs fast and there’s plenty of room to store school projects and all your family photos.

So why do you even need a family computer? Read on!

5 Reasons to Buy a Family Computer

Communication with Teachers: My husband is a teacher and the best way to get a hold of him is by email.  He only has about an hour of non-teaching time during the school day to call parents and do paperwork.  But he’s able to check his email in the few minutes between classes. I prefer emailing my kids teachers as well so we always have everything in writing.

More and more teachers also have class websites they use to keep parents up to date on classroom happenings. Some teachers will even upload assignments so you can download them at home. No more lost homework!

Teaching Kids Computer Skills: My kids have lived their entire lives with the internet. Most of their lives they’ve had touchscreens. Most schools, though, just don’t have the budget to have enough computers on hand to teach kids the skills they need on a computer. I see that as my job as a parent.

Online Learning: In 1st grade my daughter’s school offered both math and reading online “games” for the kids to play at home. We were given a username and password just for her to use.  Even if your school doesn’t offer this, there are tons of free online learning websites that help kids learn while having fun.

Learning to Research: In 3rd grade my daughter had several assignments that required her to go online to research a topic and then write about it. The days of encyclopedias are long gone. I’ll admit, I had to do a little scrambling to find reputable websites, but they are out there! And this was only 3rd grade! I can imagine we will be using the computer more and more as the kids get older.

Have Fun as a Family: The family computer isn’t just all about work. One of my kids favorite past times is to sit huddled around the laptop with their dad watching silly pet videos online. They giggle and hoot and have a ball. They also now have a ton of inside jokes between the three of them quoting the videos to each other. It’s been a fun way for them to use technology to bond.

Use the coupon codes and rebates to get a great deal on a new HP laptop for your family for the new school year!
