Easy Granola Bar Recipe

Homemade Granola Bars from growingupgabel.com @the gabels #recipe

Homemade granola bars are a favorite snack around here and this granola bar recipe is quick and easy to make.  It is also extremely versatile and a great way to use up its and pieces in your pantry. Ah, snack time. I get so tired of my kids asking for something to eat within 10 minutes of finishing up a meal. Popcorn, in the form of popcorn balls or caramel corn, is one of my go to snacks for the kids. Of course, they would prefer a candy bar! But my husband really loves protein bars or granola bars for a quick snack. I like to think of these as a cheater granola bar recipe because you use already made granola. In the picture, I actually used a granola cereal to make the recipe.  I've tried several different granola bar recipes and this is definitely one of my favorites not only for ease but also because they taste good, too. Homemade Gummy Candy

Homemade Gummy Candy from growingupgabel.com @thgabels #recipe

My family loves gummy candy in all shapes, sizes and flavors! A few years ago I discovered a recipe to make it at home so we tried it out. It was so easy! Just three ingredients and some kind of mold is all you need.  In half an hour, you will have your own gummy candy. Gummy candy is about the easiest kid friendly recipe I've ever tried. My four year old could pretty much make these herself (except the "cooking" portion).  We aren't really big Jell-O eaters, but I try to keep a few boxes in the pantry for a quick afternoon gummy candy making session when some boredom sets in.  Not exactly the healthiest of snacks but it's fun to make! You basically use three ingredients: water, gelatin and Jell-O.  I'm thinking you could also use just fruit juice instead of the Jell-O and add another packet or two of gelatin, but I haven't tried that yet.   We usually make our gummy candy in candy molds, but I had a new silicone bunny mold I wanted to try out. The gummy candy made ... [read more]

Homemade Chocolate Candy Bars

Homemade Candy Bars | Growing Up Gabel @thegabels #recipe

Homemade chocolate candy bars recipe is perfect for using up Valentine's Day, Halloween or Easter candy.  Melt some chocolate and add any other mix ins you can find in your pantry for a homemade candy bar.  These bars would be a fun treat for your Valentine or in an Easter basket. I discovered this chocolate candy bar recipe a few years ago and had completely forgotten about it, which is too bad because it's so easy to make.   We call these candy bars, but it's basically a bark.  It's a toss up as to whether my kids prefer chocolate candy or Valentine Chex Mix for Valentine's Day. You take whatever you have in your pantry that sounds like it'd be good covered in chocolate and mix it up.  I sometimes use other flavored chips, like butterscotch or peanut butter, as well and mix them in with the chocolate.  Drizzle some melted white chocolate over the bars to dress them up a little!  Pair them up with a homemade hot chocolate mix for a sweet treat some afternoon. ... Easy Valentine’s Day Recipe for Kids: Valentine Chex Mix

Valentine Chex Mix from Growing Up Gabel @thegabels #recipe

My kids are loving cooking with me in the kitchen.  So I wanted to hunt down an easy valentine's day recipe we could make together.  I still have leftover cereal from our holiday Slow Cooker Chex Mix marathons so we made a Valentine Chex Mix to satisfy our sweet tooth. My kids are finally getting to the age where we can cook together without me having panic attacks.  The kids still make a gigantic mess, but at least I'm not worried about anyone doing any real bodily damage.  We've made sugar cookies together during Christmas and they were more than happy to help mix up some hot chocolate mix.  It was time to move on to a snack. This is basically a "puppy chow" type of recipe that uses white chocolate chips instead of chocolate chips.  I'm wondering how butterscotch or even cinnamon chips would taste.  It's kind of hard to see in my photos, but you only coat half the cereal with powdered sugar to give it a two tone look.  That didn't really work for us, but the kids ... Slow Cooker Chex Mix

Slow Cooker Chex Mix

Slow Cooker Chex Mix is a favorite holiday treat in my home!  This recipe helps you make homemade Chex Mix right in your slow cooker.  Just melt the butter right in the crock and then mix in the seasonings.   Add the cereal and any other munchies you like and stir to coat.  Two hours later, you will have a delicious savory snack that the whole family loves. Chex Mix has been a Christmas tradition in my family for as long as I can remember.  My mother would make a 5 gallon container full of the stuff and we would wipe it out.   When I moved away from home, I would beg her to send me Chex Mix because I never wanted to tackle making it myself.  I hate recipes that require you to stir while baking. Weird, I know!  So when I saw that you could make Slow Cooker Chex Mix a few years ago I knew that my Chex Mix avoidance was over. The ingredients for Slow Cooker Chex Mix are pretty flexible.  Adjust the amount of butter and the seasoning to your liking.  I sometimes add ... [read more]
