How to Cook a Shrimp Boil

Shrimp boil

A shrimp boil is one of my favorite ways to feed a crowd. A simple spice pack is added to water. Then boil potatoes, sausage, corn and shrimp.  Serve with melted butter for dipping and the shrimp boil will become your favorite party food. For my daughter's birthday in July, I decided that I wanted to do a shrimp boil for the food.  A shrimp boil is a one pot stop for dinner, which I decided would be a nice change from the usual hot dogs and burgers summer fare.  When the guest count came in at 30 people, though, I balked a little at the amount of shrimp I would need to boil! But I had it in my head that I wanted a shrimp boil so that was that. Shrimp boils consist of shrimp, corn, sausage and potatoes, all cooked in a big pot. I do this differently almost every time I make one.  The amounts called for are general -- use as much or little as you want of each.  Just make sure to cook in the proper order.  The times are also a general guideline.  Each pot will cook ... “Grilled” Brownie Cupcakes

Grilled Brownie Cupcakes from growingupgabel.com @thegabels #recipe #dessert

"Grilled" brownie cupcakes will help you get ready for spring and summer picnic weather with their fun nod to grilling season.  A simple homemade brownie recipe is baked in cupcake liners and then decorated to look like a grill. These are so much fun for Father's Day, the 4th of July or any winter day that needs a bit of summer added to it.   Anyone else ready for warmer weather?  I'm itching for some spring weather! We should only have a few weeks left of cold air, but I know those of you in cooler climates probably have a good month, or more, left.  So here's a little brownie cupcake to brighten your winter day!  You can use your favorite brownie recipe or a boxed mix to make the brownie cupcakes.  I found the black gel in the baking aisle - it's there, just hard to find.  I also discovered the awesomeness of Hot Tamales candies the first time I made these cupcakes and now I make them just so I have an excuse to buy the candy. Before you know it we'll be making ... [read more]

Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry shortcake is one of my all time favorite desserts.  Growing up my mom would buy packages of little yellow shortcakes.  As an adult watching ingredients, I can't bring myself to buy them.  I've tried all different kinds of biscuit-type shortcakes, but nothing was quite the same as those little yellow cakes. I had an "ah ha" moment a few weeks ago when I realized I could use CAKE for the short cake! I'm not sure what it took me years to figure that out.  At first I thought I'd try yellow cake, but I decided to use a French vanilla cake instead.  And then in a moment of nostalgic weakness I bought a shortcake maker (which, by the way, is the only thing I've ever found that is NOT available on Amazon.com!). And it made these adorable little shortcakes! I LOVE THEM!     But this pan would work, too.  Because you need a pan/gadget that's useful for one thing only, right? But it's FUN! Oh, wait, you can get 3 of these for the same price! ... [read more]
