DIY Rain Gutter Book Shelves

The minute I saw these, I knew I had to have them!  We have got a TON of books because I have a hard time not buying books for the kids because I want them to love to read. You should see my Amazon.com Wishlist!  I’ve always liked the cloth book holders where the books face forward.  The idea behind shelving that allows books to face forward is that if kids can see the covers of books, they are more likely to read it.  But those book holders can be pricey! Rain gutter book shelves work just as well and are really cheap!

The only material we used for our shelves was a 10 foot vinyl gutter that cost $5.37 (well, and and a few screws). We did not use brackets or end caps as suggested in the directions. Two end caps were the same price as the gutter! I would’ve needed 3 sets and I just didn’t feel like spending the money. Instead, we sanded down the ends after we cut them up.  If someone pokes an eye out, then I’ll go get the end caps (promise!). My husband tried to use clips to put up the shelves, but ended up just drilling straight through the gutter into the wall and it worked just fine.

Total cost: $5.37

Ella got a 5 foot shelf next to her bed (the bottom bunk).

Miles got two,  2.5 foot shelves next to his bed.

Both kids are thrilled with their new shelves and I think they look great!  Now I need to think of more places to hang more shelves!
